The concert will start with Schubert's No 8 Symphony (Unfinished).Giacomo Puccini's Mass for four voices, nowadays known as his Messa di gloria, is a youthful work. The young twenty-one-year-old thus made his contribution to the long tradition of church music at the San Martino Cathedral in their native town of Lucca with which generations of the Puccini family had been associated. The Messa is a joyful work which foretells Puccini's career as the major composer of opera in Italy after Verdi, as can be heard most clearly in the solo parts and orchestration.
